Proto-Modern Photography Just as photography itself was born of the work of many inventors in the early nineteenth century, so modern photography developed from a number of independent artists and sources around the world. Modern photography grew out of the soft-focus tenets of Pictorialism during the first decade of the twentieth century. Photographers refined new ideas within the unique characteristics of the medium, moving away from simulating other art forms, such as drawing and painting. The early modern artist began to develop meaning in form and content beyond traditional genre or classical themes. These experimenters in photography selected more urban subjects and new points of view as painters turned from Impressionism to abstraction. |
