Sarah Charlesworth (American, 1947- )
Sarah Charlesworth, who was born in East Orange, New Jersey, studied art history and painting at Barnard College, New York City. Before graduating in 1969, she studied with Douglas Huebler; a 1968 exhibition of conceptual work by Huebler, Robert Barry, Joseph Kosuth, and Lawrence Weiner influenced her decision to turn to conceptualism. Her undergraduate thesis was a fifty-print study, with no written text, of the architecture of the Guggenheim Museum. Charlesworth worked as a free-lance photographer and furthered her knowledge of photography by taking classes at the New School with Lisette Model. She worked with a leftist publication for several years, and then began to produce a series of re-photographed collages, a project that occupied her for half a decade.
